Leapfrog Leappad Disney Brave review.

Please scroll down to the comment section if you are looking for tips on how to complete the levels in the adventure mode - and please help out if you know how to complete any of the bits other commentators are stuck on - thank you.

Nearly 2 years ago we reviewed the LeapPad Explorer from leapfrog for the ToysRus Toyologists, and it has been a favourite ever since, admittedly the older two (aged 11 and 9 now) lost interest in it although Chloe still will pick it up to doodle on in the art studio and take photos, but Mikey my 5 year old still very much enjoys playing on it, especially when he gets a new game to try out.

We were recently asked to review a great  Educational App, Disney Brave, which is a new game for the Leappad explorer, and is also compatible with the old and the new LeapPads and the Leapster.

Disney Brave is available to buy as a cartridge game or to download directly from the app centre. Priced £20 it is aimed at children aged between 5 and 8 years old.

With the games being expensive its always good to know what it is your getting for the money and how long will it entertain the children.

We downloaded this a couple of weeks ago now, and Mikey has really enjoyed playing on this game, he has not lost interest in it and there are still lots and lots of parts to the game he is yet to uncover.

disney game playing on the leappad explorerThe main portion of the game the 'adventure' mode see Merida exploring her world, you can make her walk around using the stylus, and as she goes along you come across various items to inspect and learn about.

The adventure mode has a set pattern you have to follow, and you have to work out what you need to do in order to progress, this really does make the kids feel like they have achieved something as they unlock the next sections of the game, as you progress you find new mini games, and you can then get to these games directly from the main menu.

The game has a science theme to it so the mini games help children learn about animals life cycles, and the names of plant parts aungst other things.

One of the mini games 'picture parts' is where you get to sort out and order pictures into the correct sequences.

Another mini game is where you have to drag the word labels to the correct places on the diagram.

You also get to hep the triplets explorer in the mini game 'tricky triplets', a fun puzzle game where you have to pick from a selection of shapes to enable the triplets to follow the path through the tunnels.

Even if you have not seen the movie (which we haven't yet) this is still an appealing game, with Merida working out how to fix and fire her bow it has enough action to entertain as well as having a strong educational underlying theme.

We've really enjoyed playing this game and give it a big thumbs up!

Extra Note :  We have been receiving a few questions about the controls in the game and instructions on certain aspects how to walkthrough the adventure mode - please read the comments and get in touch if you would like us to give you some hints on anything you may be stuck on!

  1. Hello Sarah. I've been searching online and have also talked to Leap Frog directly for some trouble-shooting help with the Brave game, but can't find any answers. I know you are not tech support for Leap Frog or anything but it seems like your child has made it past the part we're having trouble with, so maybe you can help. Your blog is one of the only online sources I've found ANY info about this game.
My daughter is stuck on the first level of the Adventure part of the game. Merida is trying to sneak her mom out of the castle and has to distract the guards so she makes them stew. The game says "Put the guards dinner on the table" but no matter what she tries nothing happens. I have tried helping her figure it out myself and nothing works. Can you tell me what your son does at this point in the game?
    Thanks,
    Esther

    2. Esther,
Any time you can't figure a puzzle out, press the "?". It will tell you exactly what to do. You have to make the stew. The hint tells you to get the recipe. Go to the kitchen, read the recipe, then ask the triplets to help you. Hope that helps.

    3. After you fix the step it is in your journal toolbar. Walk to the first table click on the journal to open the toolbar touch and drag the bowl of stew to the table and then find the bell. It took me a while too.

    4. We had trouble with this also, the table they are referring to is located on the screen to the left. Go back a screen to the big dinner table

    5. Thank you for these answers. We had been stuck for so long!

  2. Can you also ask Mikey how to fix the bow? We keep dragging it to the workbench as directed and Merida says that it shouldn't be too bad to fix but then it doesn't stay on the bench. ugh! (teaches patience I guess :-)

    1. I have just asked mikey and he says you have to walk to the table - if its not letting you place the bow maybe you have to collect something else first but Mikey can't talk me over what without actually playing the game - so we will get it out again and see :)

  3. For some reason we can't get past Tricky Triplets. We know what we need to do, but the game is not letting us move the correct piece in place. Maybe we missed something? Anyone have any ideas?
    Thanks!

    1. are you getting the timing right? If I remember correctly you have to be in front of the triplets if not even if you place the piece in the right place they don't cross the path...

  4. oh dear this game seems to be getting everyone stuck! for the chapter that Esther was stuck on we went through it again and I responded to Esther with this email which solved her issues - I am posting it here incase its useful for anyone else:

walkthrough --- when you see the guard and you have to sneek past as he turns around, continue past him

you then walk past the table with the apples on, go through the door on the right, then click the onion on the sideboard which brings up a game

then go up into the kitchen (top of the screen) to the three little bears who have eaten the magic cake, then click on the wheat, and the recipe book on the table, then click back on the triplets (three bears) to help find the ingredients, this will only work if you touch the wheat then the book in that order, to get them to help after touching the wheat then book, and then go into the maze with the triplets click the set pieces to follow through the pathway and find the food.

then once you have finished playing in the maze with the triplets you go back into the kitchen and the store room door is now open, tap on the barrels to open them and find the stones.

open all the barrels, to find a carrot and a garlic clove in the barrels and get the meat out the cupboard

then go back into the kitchen and put the ingredients you found in the pot by the fire. you can not progress until you have found all the ingredients, if you have opened all the barrels and got the meat - but it still does not prompt you to put the ingredients in the pot when you return to the kitchen, try collecting the apples again and the onion on the previous screen.

once it does let you put the ingredients in the pot, continue following the instructions - to make stew, then go back to the table where the apples were and put the stew on this table, then ring the dinner bell to call the guards.

and you have then completed this section

    Hope thats helpful

For everyone else would it be useful if we did some videos of this game?

Thanks for commenting tho its nice to know what people are reading :)

  10. Hi.
Glad I found this site. My daughter is stuck on level 4 (I think). She has to pick up the frog in order to get the stick from the pond. She puts the frog in her bag-roll thing but when she reopens it the frog has disappeared! This happens time and time again. Any suggestions?
